This month we will be discussing transportation options in the state of Arizona for those with visual impairment. During our discussion we will be talking about AZ vision requirements for a driver’s license, the option of bioptic telescopes, self-driving cars, and an array of non-profit and for-profit organizations throughout the state.
Dr. Grandela will be talking about the process and requirements to become a bioptic driver in the state of Arizona.
The Valley Metro is responsible for public transport in the Phoenix Metro and includes the local bus, light rail, express/RAPID buses, and a rural route for those in the more remote areas of the Valley. The Valley Metro also provides a reduced fare option for those with a disability, Medicare cardholders, and individuals over the age of 65. Ride Kick is Valley Metro’s phone application that helps riders plan their routes. The Valley Metro also provides Dial-A-Ride and RideChoice options. Travel Training is also available for free for passengers with disabilities to learn how to navigate routes and is completely free of charge. Northern Arizona offers the Mountain Line, a ParaTransit service with multiple passengers. The Northern Arizona Council of Governments serves Apache, Coconino, Navajo, and Yavapai counties. To learn more call 1-877-521-3500.
Tucson has the SunTran, which is a low-cost neighborhood transit service that services Marana, Oro Valley, Catalina, Suhuarita, Green Valley, San Xavier, Tucson Estates, Rita Ranch and Ajo. It is very similar to Valley Metro but provides service to Tucson and the surrounding communities. To learn more about how to qualify call 520-791-5409.
Yuma has the YCat, a public transit option for those that live in the area. ADA passengers have first priority on these units. Call 928-783-2235 to learn more.
There are other non-profit service organizations available to help with transportation. These include: Share the Ride, About Care, Duet, Benevilla, Foothills Caring Corps, Friends in Deed, Neighbors Who Care, New Horizons, and Verde Valley Caregivers Coalition. GoGoGrandparent is another great organization that can help with transportation.
