What You Need To Know About Low Vision!

Updated: Mar 11, 2021

If you or a loved one has difficulty reading or seeing it may be time to visit one of our Low Vision Rehabilitation Resource Centers. Read on to see if it would be a good fit!

What Is Low Vision?

When ordinary eyeglasses, contact lenses, surgery or intraocular implants cannot provide sharp vision, an individual is said to have low vision. Macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and retinitis pigmentosa, along with many other eye diseases, are causes of visual impairment or low vision. People with decreased vision still have useful vision and should seek out the care of an eye doctor who specializes in vision rehabilitation.

When Is A Low Vision Rehabilitation Evaluation Needed?

Studies show that people start losing independence when their corrected visual acuity drops to 20/60 or worse. Since vision plays a vital role in independence, most health insurances cover low vision rehabilitation examinations.

What Is A Low Vision Examination?

A vision rehabilitation is a functional vision examination, focusing on how patients function in their day to day life. Our doctors limit their practice to Low Vision Rehabilitation, helping their patients enhance their remaining vision with special low vision eyeglasses and microscopic and telescopic low vision aids. Doctors who do not specialize in low vision rehabilitation do not prescribe these custom glasses. Our doctors also prescribe other optical and non-optical low visions aids as well as appropriate low vision services. They help their patients perform their daily activities despite a visual impairment so that they can enjoy life and remain independent. The doctors of the Viewfinder Low Vision Resource Center do not take the place of your current optometrist or ophthalmologist. They will work in conjunction with your eye doctor to maximize your remaining vision.
